When we scroll through social media, we often see the glamorous side of life abroad. The scenic landscapes, the bustling city life, the promise of a new beginning—it all looks perfect. But the reality is far from what meets the eye. There is an underlying truth that is often hidden beneath those glossy images.

I thought I couldn’t be homesick. In Mumbai, I had no close relatives or friends, and I lived a relatively solitary life. I believed I was immune to loneliness. But the moment I stepped foot in Calgary, I realized how deeply I was connected to the familiar sights and sounds of my homeland. The local street vendors, the myriad options for every small need, from a photocopy to a visit to the dentist, suddenly felt like irreplaceable parts of my daily life.

The crowd in Mumbai, which once seemed insignificant, now holds a special place in my heart. I find myself searching for familiar faces in the sea of strangers, hoping to catch a glimpse of the comfort I left behind. The abstract emotions of stress and frustration, the chaotic hustle, and the vibrant atmosphere of Mumbai have become something I yearn for.

Two weeks into my new life in Calgary, every day brings new challenges and accomplishments. Getting my health card, SIN, setting up banking, and getting a phone are steps towards building a new life. Yet, with each new connection to Canada, I feel my bond with India fading. It’s a bittersweet realization—while I am proud of the new ties I am forming, I mourn the distance growing between me and my homeland.

No matter how resilient or emotionally strong we believe ourselves to be, these life-altering events shake us to our core. They reveal our vulnerability and the depth of our need for human connection.

I am incredibly grateful to my Canadian friends and the community here who have embraced me with open arms. Their support has been invaluable, making this transition smoother and less daunting. Every shared experience, whether it’s a meal, a laugh, or a heartfelt conversation, has made the days more bearable and the nights less lonely. Their kindness and hospitality remind me that even in a foreign land, there are people who care and are willing to help.

The wisdom of our ancestors holds true—altering your ecosystem, whether by choice or circumstance, brings a sense of loss and longing. Despite meticulous planning and research, there are always unforeseen challenges. This 1% of the unknown often feels heavier than the 99% we prepare for.

In the end, our survival and happiness in a new environment depend on the acceptance and support of others. We rely on human connections to help us embrace the changes we chose for ourselves. Truly, man is a social animal.
